Which breathing aid works best after extubation? new study compares NIV and HFNC

NCT ID NCT07630766

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at 102 adults in the intensive care unit who were at high risk of needing a breathing tube again after it was removed. Researchers compared two types of breathing support: noninvasive ventilation (a mask that helps push air into the lungs) and high-flow nasal cannula (warm, moist air delivered through the nose). The goal was to see which method better prevents the need to put the breathing tube back in. The study found which approach led to fewer reinsertions and better outcomes.
