Gas used in surgery put to the test for heart safety

NCT ID NCT00430989

Summary

This large study aimed to find out if using nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as part of anesthesia is safe for patients with heart disease or risk factors during major surgery. Over 7,000 adult patients at risk for heart problems were randomly assigned to receive anesthesia either with or without nitrous oxide. Researchers tracked serious heart and health events for 30 days after surgery to see if the gas increased risks.
