Could a simple gas canister replace opioids for burn victims?

NCT ID NCT03695887

First seen May 07, 2026 · Last updated May 07, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a handheld nitrous oxide canister (laughing gas) can safely reduce pain and anxiety during burn dressing changes. About 30 adult burn patients will try both the gas and standard pain medicine in a crossover design. The goal is to find a safer alternative to high-dose narcotics, which can cause breathing problems.
