Could a heart drug ointment soothe hemorrhoid pain?

NCT ID NCT07391501

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether nitroglycerin ointment, a drug often used for chest pain, can reduce pain after rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids. About 68 adults with grade I-III hemorrhoids will apply the ointment or a placebo three times daily for two weeks after the procedure. The main goal is to see if fewer people need rescue pain medication within 72 hours.

What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial. The ointment may not work better than placebo, and side effects like headache or low blood pressure are possible.
