Gas treatment aims to shield kidneys during risky heart operations

NCT ID NCT02836899

Summary

This study tested whether inhaling nitric oxide gas during and after prolonged heart surgery could prevent acute kidney injury, a serious and common complication. It involved 250 adult patients at high risk for kidney problems due to their blood vessel health. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either the nitric oxide treatment or a placebo gas for 24 hours starting at surgery, and researchers compared kidney outcomes between the two groups.
