Nitric oxide trial to shield hospital staff from COVID-19 falls short

NCT ID NCT04312243

First seen Jan 08, 2026 · Last updated May 31, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study aimed to see if breathing in nitric oxide gas could protect healthcare workers from catching COVID-19 while caring for infected patients. It planned to enroll 470 participants but was stopped early with only 24 people. The trial compared those who inhaled the gas to those who did not, measuring how many got infected. Because it ended early, we cannot draw firm conclusions about its effectiveness.
