Brain fluid protein may guide hydrocephalus care

NCT ID NCT05399602

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study looked at whether measuring a protein called NfL in the blood or spinal fluid can help doctors make better treatment decisions for people with hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain). Researchers studied 41 adults, including those with hydrocephalus and a comparison group having routine spine surgery. The goal was to see if NfL levels relate to patients' symptoms and could guide adjustments to treatment, like valve settings. This was a small pilot study to test feasibility, not a treatment trial.
