New shoulder surgery aims to spare key tendons, boost recovery

NCT ID NCT01961986

Summary

This study is comparing two ways to perform total shoulder replacement surgery for people with severe arthritis. About 120 patients will be randomly assigned to get either the traditional surgery or a newer 'rotator cuff sparing' technique that avoids cutting a major shoulder tendon. Researchers will follow patients for two years to see if the newer method leads to better shoulder strength and function while still providing good pain relief.
