New needle route may stop deadly bleeding in clogged portal veins
NCT ID NCT07666256
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new procedure for people with a completely blocked main portal vein who have had at least two episodes of dangerous variceal bleeding. Doctors will use ultrasound to guide a needle into a vein in the gut, then try to reopen the blocked vein or create a new bypass to lower pressure. Only 15 participants will be enrolled, and the main goals are to see if the procedure works and how safe it is.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Percutaneous mesenteric vein puncture procedure
What this could lead to
If successful, this procedure could offer a new treatment option for patients with blocked portal veins who have few alternatives to stop life-threatening variceal bleeding.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study (15 people) with no control group. The procedure carries risks like internal bleeding or bowel injury, and it may not work for everyone.
