New combo procedure may stop deadly bleeding in rare vein disorder

NCT ID NCT07310316

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at a two-part procedure to prevent repeat bleeding in people with cavernous transformation of the portal vein, a rare condition where the main vein to the liver is blocked. The procedure involves blocking the bleeding veins and partially blocking the splenic artery to reduce pressure. Researchers will track 26 patients to see if this approach lowers the chance of rebleeding compared to standard care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this combined procedure could offer a new way to control bleeding in patients with this rare vein condition who don't respond to standard treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early retrospective study with only 26 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The procedure carries risks like bleeding, infection, or worsening liver function.
