New hope for myeloma patients: could a smart drug outperform standard therapy?

NCT ID NCT07285239

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 3 trial will compare two drug combinations for people newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma who are not eligible for or refuse a stem cell transplant. About 500 participants will receive either belantamab mafodotin or daratumumab, both combined with standard drugs (bortezomib, lenalidomide, and dexamethasone). The goal is to see if the belantamab combination leads to deeper cancer clearance (MRD negativity) and longer time without the disease progressing.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
belantamab mafodotin (a targeted drug that delivers a toxin to cancer cells)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a more effective first-line treatment option for people with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma who cannot have a stem cell transplant.
What could go wrong
This is a large phase 3 trial, but it is not yet recruiting. The experimental drug may cause side effects like eye problems, and it is not known if it will be better than the current standard treatment.
