New gas analyzer could spot lung leaks faster
NCT ID NCT06548386
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests a new, reusable gas analyzer that attaches to chest drains to detect air leaks after lung surgery. The device measures carbon dioxide, oxygen, and pressure to identify leaks, potentially improving accuracy over the current method of watching for bubbles. About 33 adults scheduled for thoracic surgery will participate, and the device will be compared to standard visual inspection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
pleural gas analyzer (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could provide a more accurate and reliable way to detect air leaks after lung surgery, potentially reducing complications and hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early feasibility study with only 33 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The device may not be more accurate than current methods.
