New blood thinner may shorten hospital stay after heart surgery

NCT ID NCT03702582

First seen May 19, 2026 ยท Last updated May 19, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether a newer blood thinner (rivaroxaban) is safer and more cost-effective than the standard drug warfarin for patients who develop atrial fibrillation after heart surgery. About 100 adults who had open-heart surgery and then experienced a new irregular heartbeat were randomly assigned to receive either rivaroxaban or warfarin. The main goal was to see if the newer drug could reduce the length of hospital stay and lower the risk of major bleeding.
