Blood cell count may reveal who faces worst outcomes in rare autoimmune disease

NCT ID NCT05989399

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study examined whether the level of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, in the blood can help predict how severe antisynthetase syndrome (ASyS) will be. ASyS is a rare autoimmune disease that can cause muscle inflammation, lung disease, and other symptoms. Researchers looked at data from 89 patients to see if a high neutrophil count at diagnosis was linked to more severe disease. The goal is to find a simple, widely available test to identify high-risk patients early.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to identify which patients with antisynthetase syndrome are at risk for severe disease, helping doctors intervene earlier.

What could go wrong

This is a small, retrospective study that only looks back at existing data. The findings may not apply to all patients and need to be confirmed in larger, prospective trials.
