Sound waves to silence depression's inner critic?

NCT ID NCT04832685

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether low intensity focused ultrasound can change negative thought patterns in people with depression. Researchers will target a key brain network involved in mind-wandering and self-judgment. 80 participants will receive both real and sham ultrasound sessions to see if it reduces rumination and negative self-judgment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

low intensity focused ultrasound (BrainSonix Pulsar 1002 device)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment for depression that reduces rumination and negative self-judgment.

What could go wrong

This is a small early feasibility study (80 people) testing only short-term effects. It may not lead to a lasting treatment, and the ultrasound approach is still experimental.
