Rural moms get extra help: can nurse visits cut ER trips?
NCT ID NCT06682520
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a program called NEST-Rural that provides extra nurse and social worker support to new mothers in five rural North Carolina counties. About 1,300 women will be randomly assigned to receive either the program or usual care. The goal is to see if the program leads to fewer hospital readmissions, fewer emergency visits, and better follow-up care for both mothers and babies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a coordinated nurse and social worker support program reduces emergency visits and improves follow-up care for new mothers and babies in rural areas.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage implementation study, not a drug trial. Results may vary by location and may not apply to other regions. The program's success depends on local resources and participation.
