Nerve block showdown: which injection cuts opioid need after breast surgery?

NCT ID NCT06833697

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compared two types of nerve blocks—erector spinae plane block and serratus posterior superior intercostal plane block—for pain relief after breast and armpit surgery. The goal was to see which block reduces the need for opioid painkillers and their side effects like nausea and breathing problems. Sixty adults aged 18-80 who had breast surgery with lymph node removal took part. Both blocks were given after surgery but before waking up, using ultrasound guidance.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

nerve block (erector spinae plane block or serratus posterior superior intercostal plane block)

What this could lead to

If one block works better, it could help patients use fewer opioids after breast surgery, reducing side effects like nausea and breathing trouble.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study (60 people) comparing two similar techniques. The results may not apply to all patients or surgeries, and neither block may prove clearly better.
