Can a vacuum dressing stop Post-Mastectomy fluid pockets?
NCT ID NCT07607366
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a negative pressure wound dressing (PICO) can reduce the risk of seroma—a common fluid buildup—after mastectomy for breast cancer. About 76 women will be randomly assigned to get either the standard dressing or the PICO device, which they wear for a week. Researchers will also check for infections, bleeding, and wound healing problems.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
PICO negative pressure wound therapy device (Smith and Nephew)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could give surgeons a simple way to lower the chance of fluid buildup after mastectomy, reducing discomfort and extra visits.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 76 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. The device must be worn for 7 days and may cause minor vibration noise.
