Can targeted neck exercises outperform standard stretching?
NCT ID NCT06407479
First seen Aug 14, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether adding eccentric muscle training or proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques to a standard neck stretching and stabilization program can better ease non-specific neck pain. Adults aged 18–65 with neck pain lasting at least a week and reduced deep neck muscle endurance will be randomly assigned to one of the two added techniques. Over six weeks, researchers will measure changes in neck disability, pain quality, range of motion, muscle endurance, fear of movement, and quality of life to see which approach offers more benefit.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Eccentric muscle training and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques, added to a standard neck stretching and stabilization program
- What this could lead to
- If one technique proves more effective, it could point toward a better exercise-based approach for managing chronic neck pain and reducing disability.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 45 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Exercise benefits can vary, and neither technique is guaranteed to outperform the other or standard care.
