New light tool aims to spot hidden oral cancer during surgery

NCT ID NCT01198119

First seen Mar 17, 2026 · Last updated Apr 28, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tested a technique called Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) that uses special light to help surgeons see early cancer spots in the mouth that are hard to detect with the naked eye. The goal was to see if NBI could help remove all cancer tissue during surgery. The trial included 23 adults with a first-time oral cancer who were scheduled for surgery. The study was stopped early, but the results help researchers understand how well NBI works for guiding cancer removal.
