Opioid overdose drug tested to stop sudden death in epilepsy

NCT ID NCT02332447

Summary

This study tested if a single dose of naloxone, a drug used to reverse opioid overdoses, could prevent life-threatening breathing pauses that sometimes occur right after a severe epileptic seizure. Researchers gave the injection or a placebo to 485 adults with hard-to-treat epilepsy immediately after they had a major seizure during hospital monitoring. The goal was to see if naloxone could help patients recover normal breathing faster, potentially reducing the risk of sudden unexpected death.
