Can a single drug protect transplant options after islet graft loss?
NCT ID NCT01999361
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether the drug Myfortic can prevent the immune system from becoming sensitized after a failed islet transplant in people with type 1 diabetes. Participants have already lost their graft and will take Myfortic alone for two years. The goal is to see if this reduces the risk of developing antibodies that could make future transplants harder.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Myfortic (mycophenolic acid)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that Myfortic helps prevent the immune system from becoming sensitized after islet graft loss, potentially preserving future transplant options.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase study with only 18 participants and no control group. The drug may not prevent sensitization, and side effects from immunosuppression are possible.
