Music as medicine? new study tests if tunes can heal stroke minds

NCT ID NCT07127159

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study explores whether listening to music on purpose, for one hour a day, can improve mental health in people who had a stroke at least six months ago. Sixty participants will be randomly assigned to listen to either music or an audiobook at home for four weeks. Researchers will track mood, memory, and brain activity through questionnaires, cognitive tasks, and MRI scans.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Intentional music listening

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to improve emotional well-being and mental health after a stroke.

What could go wrong

This is a small feasibility study (60 people) with no phase, so it is too early to know if music listening truly helps. Results may not apply to all stroke survivors.
