Scientists probe muscle repair secrets with growth hormone and zaps

NCT ID NCT05746650

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at how connective tissue in muscles and tendons repairs itself after an injury. Forty people scheduled for knee surgery will receive either growth hormone or a placebo, with or without electrical stimulation to their hamstring muscles. Researchers will measure protein production in the tissue to understand the repair process.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Growth hormone (somatropin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help scientists understand how muscles and tendons repair after injury, potentially leading to better treatments for muscle injuries.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study focused on measuring biological processes, not on proving a treatment works. The results may not lead to any direct medical benefit.
