Could a simple trigger point shot replace joint injections for hip pain?

NCT ID NCT07347041

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two types of injections for hip osteoarthritis pain: one into the joint and one into nearby muscle trigger points. Over 1,000 adults with hip pain will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups and followed for two years. The goal is to see if the simpler trigger point injection works just as well as the joint injection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
lidocaine and triamcinolone acetonide (steroid) injection
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simpler, safer injection option for hip osteoarthritis pain that is easier to perform than joint injections.
What could go wrong
This is a non-inferiority study, so it may only show that trigger point injections are not worse than joint injections, not that they are better. The results may not apply to all types of chronic pain.
