MRI-Guided radiation may improve cervical cancer treatment
NCT ID NCT03005743
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This large phase III trial tested whether using MRI scans to guide internal radiation (brachytherapy) works better than the traditional X-ray method for women with locally advanced cervical cancer. Over 1,000 participants received either MRI-based or X-ray-based brachytherapy. The goal was to see if MRI guidance improves tumor control and reduces severe side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
radiation therapy (brachytherapy)
What this could lead to
If MRI-guided brachytherapy proves better, it could become the new standard for treating locally advanced cervical cancer, offering better tumor control and fewer long-term side effects.
What could go wrong
This trial is completed but results are not yet widely implemented. MRI-guided brachytherapy requires specialized equipment and training, so it may not be available everywhere. Also, individual results vary.
