New scan could spare rectal cancer patients unnecessary surgery

NCT ID NCT06719414

Summary

This study is testing a special type of MRI scan to see if it can accurately tell whether a patient's rectal cancer has been completely eliminated by their initial treatment (chemotherapy/radiation) before they have surgery. The goal is to help doctors better decide which patients truly need surgery after their initial therapy. About 320 people with locally advanced rectal cancer who have completed their initial treatment will have this scan as part of their standard care.
