Can a computer model read MRI scans to predict which liver cancer patients will relapse?
NCT ID NCT07830576
First seen Sep 21, 2026 · Last updated Sep 21, 2026
Summary
Researchers are building a computer model that combines detailed features from preoperative MRI scans with routine clinical information to estimate the risk of cancer returning after surgery for colorectal liver metastases. The study includes adults who had surgery for these liver tumors and had a high-quality MRI before surgery. By linking scan patterns to outcomes like recurrence-free survival, the team aims to create a tool that helps doctors plan follow-up care and treatment. No experimental drug or procedure is tested; the study only observes and analyzes existing medical data.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If the model works, doctors could use routine MRI scans and clinical data to estimate a patient's risk of recurrence after surgery and tailor follow-up and treatment plans.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational modeling study, not a treatment trial. The model may not predict accurately in new patients or hospitals, and it cannot replace clinical judgment.

Inclusion Criteria: Age \>= 18 years old. Confirmed diagnosis of colorectal cancer with liver metastases (CRLM). Underwent surgical resection for colorectal liver metastases. Preoperative liver magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed with high-quality images available for 3D radiomics feature extraction. Complete baseline clinical, laboratory, and post-operative follow-up survival data. Exclusion Criteria: Patients who received local ablation only (such as radiofrequency ablation) without surgical resection. Preoperative MRI images with severe artifacts or poor quality that prevent high-throughput radiomics analysis. Concurrent history of other primary malignant neoplasms. Missing key clinical variables or lost to follow-up immediately after surgical intervention.
