MRI could help doctors decide when to deliver babies at risk of stillbirth
NCT ID NCT02297724
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study uses MRI scans to measure how well oxygen moves through the placenta in pregnancies complicated by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), where the baby is not growing as expected. Researchers will compare MRI results with placenta tissue after birth and track the baby's growth afterward. The goal is to develop a safe, non-invasive way to identify which babies are at highest risk and need early delivery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oxygen
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a non-invasive MRI test that helps doctors decide the safest time to deliver babies with growth problems, potentially reducing stillbirths.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study with only 80 participants. The MRI methods may not prove reliable enough for routine clinical use, and results may not apply to all types of IUGR.
