First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether motivational interviewing, a patient-centered counseling approach, can improve outcomes of standard gum disease treatment (subgingival instrumentation) in 66 adults aged 30-50 with periodontitis. Participants will receive either motivational interviewing or standard oral hygiene instructions at baseline and one month. The study measures motivation, oral health quality of life, and self-efficacy at 3 and 6 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
motivational interviewing
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a simple counseling talk helps people with gum disease stick to their oral care routine and get better results from standard dental treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 66 people. It tests a behavioral method, not a drug, so the effect may be modest. Results may not apply to everyone with gum disease.
