Could a tiny dose of morphine make C-Section recovery less painful?

NCT ID NCT06797973

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 37 times

Summary

This study is testing whether adding a small amount of morphine to the standard spinal anesthesia can improve pain control after a planned C-section, without causing serious side effects for mothers or babies. About 1,300 women will be randomly assigned to receive either morphine or a placebo (salt water) in their spinal injection. All participants will also get standard painkillers after surgery. Researchers will track pain levels, side effects, and any serious complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

morphine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a simple way to reduce pain after C-section without needing extra strong painkillers.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 4 trial, so the drug is already approved, but the low dose may not work well enough, or side effects like nausea or breathing problems could outweigh benefits.
