Could a cheap rectal pill cut C-Section bleeding?

NCT ID NCT07188207

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving a rectal dose of misoprostol before a planned C-section, on top of the usual oxytocin, can reduce blood loss during and after surgery. About 282 women having elective C-sections will be randomly assigned to receive either standard care or standard care plus misoprostol. The goal is to find a simple, low-cost way to prevent dangerous bleeding.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
misoprostol (rectal) plus oxytocin (intravenous)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a cheap, heat-stable way to lower the risk of dangerous bleeding during planned C-sections.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (282 participants) and the added benefit over standard care may be small. Misoprostol can cause side effects like shivering or fever.
