Can mirror therapy and brain beats help stroke survivors walk again?

NCT ID NCT06011018

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether combining mirror therapy with either mild electrical stimulation or special sound beats can improve leg movement in people who had a stroke at least six months ago. Seventy-two participants will be assigned to one of three groups and will do ankle exercises while watching their unaffected leg in a mirror. The goal is to see which combination works best for recovery and how it affects brain activity and heart rate.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

mirror therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, binaural beats

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a simple, non-drug way to improve leg movement and reduce spasticity in stroke survivors.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with only 72 participants, so results may not apply to all stroke patients. The improvements may be small or not last long.
