Pagoda-Based mindfulness could ease depression in vietnam
NCT ID NCT06598579
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), adapted for Vietnamese culture, can reduce depression symptoms and improve quality of life. One hundred sixty adults with mild-to-moderate depression will be recruited from eight Buddhist pagodas near Hanoi. Half will receive MBCT in the pagoda, and the other half will continue with traditional Buddhist meditation. The goal is to see if offering therapy in a familiar, low-stigma setting can help more people access mental health care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a low-stigma, accessible way to reduce depression symptoms in community settings where mental health care is scarce.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 160 participants, and results may not apply broadly. The control group also involves meditation, so the added benefit of MBCT may be small.
