Summary

Researchers are testing whether an 8-session mindfulness program can reduce anxiety and depression symptoms in university students aged 18 to 30. Participants are randomly assigned to mindfulness training, a psychoeducation group, or a placebo group, and neither they nor the assessors know which group they are in. The study uses EEG brain recordings and standard cognitive and mood tests to see if mindfulness changes brain activity or thinking patterns compared with the other groups.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
an 8-session mindfulness-based intervention
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a brief, low-cost way to ease anxiety and depression symptoms in young adults and point to brain signals that track improvement.
What could go wrong
The study is small and early, so any benefits may be modest or not hold up in larger groups. Mindfulness programs do not work for everyone, and some people may find the exercises uncomfortable or unhelpful.
