Could a simple hearing aid quiet the ringing in your ears?

NCT ID NCT07489807

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether mild-gain hearing aids (boosting sound by about 8 decibels) can reduce the distress and loudness of tinnitus in adults with normal hearing. Fifteen participants will try both the active device and a placebo (no amplification) for three weeks each. The goal is to see if even a small amount of amplification can help quiet the ringing.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Hearing aid with mild amplification (8dB gain from 1 Hz to 8 kHz)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug option to ease tinnitus annoyance for people with normal hearing.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 15 people. The benefit may be small or no better than a placebo, and results may not apply to everyone with tinnitus.
