Could a finger prick replace needles for cancer drug monitoring?

NCT ID NCT06545292

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study is testing whether a simple finger-prick blood sample (dried blood spot) can accurately measure levels of certain cancer drugs in the body. Researchers will compare results from the finger-prick method with standard blood draws in 360 adults taking oral or infused cancer medications. If the finger-prick method works well, it could allow patients to monitor their drug levels from home, making treatment more convenient.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dried blood spot microsampling (diagnostic test)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could allow cancer patients to monitor their medication levels from home with a simple finger prick, reducing hospital visits.

What could go wrong

This is an early validation study, not a treatment trial. The finger-prick method may not match standard blood draws closely enough, and home sampling may be impractical for some patients.
