Could a skin needling tool and plant extract lighten dark gums?
NCT ID NCT07410156
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new way to lighten dark gums using a microneedling pen and a cream made from milk thistle extract (silymarin). It compares this method to two standard treatments: cutting the dark tissue away with a scalpel or burning it off with a laser. Thirty adults with naturally dark gums will be randomly assigned to one of the three groups. The main goal is to see how well the pigmentation fades and whether it comes back.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Silymarin (topical cream)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a less painful, effective option for reducing dark gums without cutting or lasers.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 30 people. The results may not apply to everyone, and the treatment might not work better than existing methods.
