Could microneedling make scar treatment less painful and more effective?
NCT ID NCT07718269
First seen Jul 21, 2026 · Last updated Jul 23, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial tests whether applying the drug 5-fluorouracil through microneedling works better than standard injections of the same drug or corticosteroids for treating hypertrophic scars and keloids. About 60 adults with these raised scars will receive one of four treatments. Researchers will measure changes in scar appearance using a standard scale to see which approach is safest and most effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- microneedling with 5-fluorouracil, intralesional 5-fluorouracil, intralesional triamcinolone acetonide, or microneedling with saline
- What this could lead to
- If microneedling-assisted delivery works better than standard injections, it could offer a less painful, more effective treatment for raised scars.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial, so results may not apply broadly. Microneedling itself can cause temporary redness or irritation.
