Could a new toothpaste tame gum disease by keeping good bacteria happy?
NCT ID NCT07397312
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests a new toothpaste designed to protect the natural balance of bacteria in the mouth. 28 adults with periodontitis will brush twice daily for 3 months while continuing their usual gum disease care. Researchers will check if the toothpaste improves oral health compared to before use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
microbiome-modulating toothpaste
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple daily toothpaste that helps control gum disease by supporting a healthy mouth microbiome.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study (28 people) with no blinding or placebo control, so results may not be reliable or generalizable. The toothpaste is a cosmetic product, not a proven treatment.
