New hybrid heart surgery aims to spare patients from open chest incision

NCT ID NCT07314138

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a combination of minimally invasive bypass surgery (through small chest incisions) and stents can match or beat standard open-heart bypass for people with blockages in all three main heart arteries. The trial will enroll 250 adults and measure complications within 30 days, such as death, heart attack, stroke, or infection. If successful, this hybrid approach could mean a faster recovery and less scarring for patients.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Multivessel hybrid coronary revascularization (minimally invasive bypass surgery plus stents)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer a less invasive alternative to open-heart surgery, with faster recovery and fewer short-term complications for people with severe coronary artery disease.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively early-stage trial (250 participants) comparing two surgical strategies. The minimally invasive technique may not be suitable for all patients and could have higher rates of conversion to open surgery or incomplete revascularization.
