Daily Low-Dose chemo tested for patients with no other options
NCT ID NCT00420563
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested two treatments for people with advanced cancer who cannot have standard therapy. One group took a low-dose chemotherapy pill (cyclophosphamide) daily, and the other took a hormone pill (megestrol). The goal was to see which treatment could slow cancer growth for at least two months. The trial enrolled 88 adults with various cancers (except breast cancer) and measured how long the cancer stayed under control.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cyclophosphamide (low-dose chemotherapy) and megestrol (hormone therapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a gentle, long-term chemotherapy option for patients with advanced cancer who have run out of standard treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 88 participants. The benefit may be modest, and side effects like low blood counts or blood clots are possible.
