Could a common steroid boost stroke recovery?

NCT ID NCT07175649

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding the steroid methylprednisolone to standard clot-removal treatment helps people recover from severe stroke. About 912 adults aged 18–85 with a large clot in the front part of the brain will receive either the steroid or a placebo for three days. The goal is to see if more people can live independently 90 days later.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Methylprednisolone (a steroid anti-inflammatory drug)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that adding a steroid to standard clot removal improves recovery for people with severe stroke.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with no phase assigned, so results are uncertain. Steroids can have side effects like infection risk, and the benefit may be small or absent.
