Could a common drug shorten time on breathing machines in the ICU?
NCT ID NCT02025855
Summary
This study tested whether adding methadone, a long-acting pain medication, to standard care could help patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) who are on breathing machines come off the ventilator faster. The idea was that methadone might ease withdrawal symptoms from other strong pain medicines, allowing doctors to reduce sedation more quickly. The trial involved a small group of mechanically ventilated patients and compared those who received methadone to those who received a placebo.
