Metformin pause: does a Two-Week break worsen blood sugar control?
NCT ID NCT07659444
First seen Jun 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026
Summary
This study looks at what happens when adults with metabolic syndrome stop taking their usual metformin medication for 14 days. Researchers want to see if a short break affects insulin sensitivity, blood sugar levels, and other health markers. Participants will be randomly assigned to either stop metformin for two weeks or continue as usual, and will undergo glucose tests and wear a continuous glucose monitor. The goal is to understand the real-world impact of temporary metformin interruptions.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
metformin withdrawal (behavioural intervention)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could help doctors understand whether short breaks from metformin are safe and how quickly glucose control changes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 28 participants. It is not testing a new treatment, so results may not apply to everyone or lead to direct health changes.
