Diabetes drug tested to fight TB and protect lungs in HIV patients
NCT ID NCT04930744
Summary
This study tested whether adding the common diabetes medication metformin to standard antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis (TB) is safe and helps people recover better, especially for those also living with HIV. Researchers wanted to see if metformin could help clear the TB infection faster and cause less lasting lung damage. About 112 adults with both TB and HIV were randomly assigned to receive either standard TB drugs alone or standard drugs plus metformin for 11 weeks.
