Can a common diabetes drug reshape blood health in PCOS?
NCT ID NCT07793838
First seen Aug 31, 2026 · Last updated Sep 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether metformin, a common diabetes drug, changes iron, vitamin B12, and blood parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Women aged 18 to 40 with PCOS receive either metformin or a placebo for six months. Researchers measure metabolic, iron, vitamin B12, and blood cell changes at three and six months. The goal is to understand how metformin affects these health markers in PCOS.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Metformin, a diabetes drug, taken as 1500 mg daily in three divided doses for six months
- What this could lead to
- If metformin improves iron and vitamin B12 status in women with PCOS, it could help manage anemia and related symptoms in this condition.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single trial with a specific population, and results may not apply broadly. Metformin can cause gastrointestinal side effects and may lower vitamin B12 levels, which could offset benefits.
