Can a Brain-Training class ease mental illness symptoms?
NCT ID NCT07051746
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a group therapy program called Metacognitive Training (MCT) in 18 Taiwanese adults with schizophrenia, major depression, or bipolar disorder. Over 4 weeks, participants attended 8 sessions that taught them to spot and reduce thinking biases linked to symptoms like delusions and low mood. The goal was to see if the program could improve symptoms, thinking skills, and daily function. Because the study was small and had no comparison group, the results are preliminary.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Metacognitive Training (MCT) – a group therapy program that teaches people to recognize and reduce thinking biases
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a low-cost, drug-free way to help people with mental disorders manage symptoms like delusions, depression, and anxiety.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, single-group study with no comparison group, so results may be due to chance or other factors. It also only includes people from one hospital in Taiwan, so findings may not apply to others.
