Scientists hunt for clues in blood and stool to predict cancer therapy outcomes
NCT ID NCT06831669
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is collecting blood, urine, tissue, and stool samples from 250 people with locally advanced rectal cancer who are about to receive chemotherapy and radiation before surgery. Researchers will analyze these samples for tiny substances called metabolites to see if they can predict how well the tumor responds and whether severe side effects like radiation proctitis occur. The goal is to find a way to personalize treatment and reduce unnecessary suffering.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple test that helps doctors predict which patients will benefit most from total neoadjuvant therapy and who might experience severe side effects.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study, not a treatment trial. The identified metabolites may not prove reliable enough for routine use, and results may not apply to all rectal cancer patients.
