Can a text message about vaccine choices boost COVID-19 shots?
NCT ID NCT07838038
First seen Sep 24, 2026 · Last updated Oct 16, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
Researchers at Kaiser Permanente Southern California are testing whether reminder messages that highlight COVID-19 vaccine choices increase vaccination among adults at high risk of severe illness. The trial randomly assigns eligible members to receive either a standard reminder or a message with extra information about available vaccine options, such as differences in how vaccines work or endorsements from healthcare professionals. The main goal is to see whether these messages affect receipt of the updated COVID-19 vaccine, with a secondary look at influenza vaccination.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Text messages about COVID-19 vaccine choices and reminders
- What this could lead to
- If it works, health systems could use simple message changes to increase COVID-19 vaccination among people at high risk of severe illness.
- What could go wrong
- Messaging may not change vaccination behavior, and effects seen in one healthcare system may not apply elsewhere. The trial tests messages, not a new vaccine.
